Land's End Composers Competition and Workshop

Tuesday, April 12, 2011, 4:00 PM - 6:00PM
Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary

The winner of the Land's End Composers Competition and Workshop was The View from the Lighthouse by Cavan Carson for violin and piano.

Land's End performed and discussed brand new works with the competing composers and a jury consisting of Akiko Tominaga, George Fenwick and Robert Rosen.  Carson was announced the winner at the end of the workshop.

The View from the Lighthouse is a piece for violin and piano in three movements.  Each movement uses a type of serialism developed by Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Boulez respectively.  This piece intends to create images of scenery viewed from atop a lighthouse at the demise of the Earth.  It is thus a highly programmatic and expressive piece of music.  The violin and piano interact with one another in many ways to create this imagery; for example, the irregular patterns in the second half of the second movement are intended to represent waves crashing against a cliff.  All three movements are in binary form, although the second and third have a short introduction leading to the climax at the very end of the piece where the notes are "torn off" (not allowed to resonate), truly representing "the end".

Land’s End performed and discussed brand new works with the competing composers and a jury consisting of Akiko Tominaga, George Fenwick and Robert Rosen.  Carson was announced the winner at the end of the workshop.

The View From The Lighthouse was performed by Land’s End at the upcoming cabaret, Faces of Ebony, at the Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club on May 13th and 14th at 8:00 pm.

Cavan Carson is a composer and pianist originally from Napanee, Ontario, Canada. Interested in music from a young age, Cavan availed himself of the playing opportunities, studying piano privately and playing in the school band. Upon attending Queen's University at Kingston, Ontario, Cavan began taking composition lessons and his interests and skills began to flourish quite quickly. While at Queen's, Cavan gave many public performances of his works at the University's new music "Mosaic" concerts. Cavan studied with Marjan Mozetich and John Burge while there and graduated from Queen's University in 2010, receiving the Graham George Memorial Scholarship in Composition from the University. He is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Composition at the University of Calgary.
