Malcolm Forsyth (1936) composed his set of six Intimacies for flute, viola, and guitar, (later harp). The movement recorded by Land’s End, the Dirge, is for guitar and piano only. In it, the instruments are having a conversation – they seem to ask questions, suggest ideas, and clash in the middle, when the tempo seems to stop, and they respond directly, one to the other.
Listen to the piece at least three times. Imagine the character of the individuals who are conversing? What are they saying? Is there a special issues they must deal with? In your creative writing journal, write-out this imagined conversation. Then, with a partner, perform them for your class.
